Descript vs OpusClip: editing a video or finding clips?
Descript and OpusClip both help turn recorded footage into shorter videos. Start your comparison with the part of that job you need help doing: shaping the source recording or finding moments to publish from it.
Compare the workflows
| Your task | Descript | OpusClip |
|---|---|---|
| Edit the source | Cut and rearrange recorded video by editing its transcript. | Start from a longer recording and review suggested clips. |
| Prepare short videos | Create clips and captions from recorded content. | Generate shorter clips, add captions and reframe footage. |
| Check before export | Transcript edits, sentence flow and audio quality. | Clip context, crop, caption accuracy and the ending. |
These are overlapping capabilities, not exclusive feature lists. The comparison is based on the official Descript product page and the official OpusClip product page, checked October 13, 2026. We have not run a hands-on performance benchmark.
When to start with Descript
Put Descript on your shortlist if your recording still needs substantial editing: removing a digression, rearranging an explanation, or preparing the full episode as well as clips. A transcript gives you a way to review the words before you focus on the final framing.
In your trial, make one precise correction and inspect the result. Does the new cut sound natural? Can you keep the complete answer intact? A tool is useful when its editing approach matches the way you think about the recording.
When to start with OpusClip
Put OpusClip on your shortlist if you already have a recording you want to reuse and the immediate task is selecting shorter moments. Check whether each suggested clip answers a recognizable question without requiring the viewer to have watched the full video.
Use a segment with more than one speaker or a product demonstration in your test. Watch the crop at each cut and check that it retains the person or object the viewer needs to see.
A fair test with your own footage
- Use the same recording and choose the same intended audience.
- Ask each workflow for three useful clips, not simply the largest possible number.
- Correct names, numbers and captions. Record the minutes spent making those corrections.
- Watch the exported files on a phone, with and without sound.
- Count the clips you would actually publish and compare the review effort per usable clip.

Before choosing a paid plan
Confirm the current upload allowance, export limits, watermark rules, resolution and collaboration options on each provider’s pricing page. Use your actual recording length and expected monthly output to compare plans. Published prices and included features can change.
